Convenient on-street parking with pay-and-display
Algernon Road Car Park is a small on-street surface facility providing 30 pay-and-display bays along Shields Lane, adjacent to residential terraces and local shops. Operating hours are 8 am6 pm Monday through Saturday; unrestricted parking is allowed outside these hours. Tariffs are £0.50 per hour, with a daily maximum of £3, payable at the single pay and display machine accepting coins or contactless payment, or via the RingGo app. Two designated accessible bays (3.6 m wide) are positioned near the dropped-kerb pedestrian call points for crossing to the Côte Brasserie and local grocery store on Heaton Road. The asphalt bays feature clear white line markings, which were repainted in late 2024, and the site benefits from LED streetlamps providing coverage after dusk. CCTV cameras mounted on existing lamp columns monitor the length of Shields Lane; local community wardens conduct twice-daily patrols for parking compliance. Directional signage at the entrance points drivers toward nearby bus stops serving City Centre and Jesmond. The car park underwent surface crack-sealing in mid-2023, and kerb edges were reprofiled to prevent water pooling in heavy rain.
