Free heritage site parking for Barbury Castle and Ridgeway trails
Barbury Castle Car Park is a free gravel lot located off the B4019, serving the Barbury Castle Iron Age hillfort and The Ridgeway National Trail. The facility accommodates approximately 70 vehicles on a first-come basis and operates from dawn until dusk (approximately 6 am–8 pm); no overnight parking. There is no lighting or CCTV; visitors should park and depart during daylight. An information board provides archaeological background, walking trail maps, and wildlife guides (including skylarks and butterflies). Benches and picnic tables are sited overlooking the hillfort summit. Pedestrian paths lead directly to the hillfort entrance (100 m) and connecting Ridgeway footpath (200 m). No EV charging is available; nearest station at Stanton Country Park Car Park (10 km). Seasonal guided walks and heritage festivals reduce capacity by 50%; overflow directed to roadside lay-bys on B4019 (200 m) with temporary marshals. Maintenance crews clear litter monthly and inspect signage quarterly.
