Car Park 1 on Queen Elizabeth Avenue is a 120-space surface lot serving the Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College and adjacent residential complexes in Birtley. The tarmacadam surface, resurfaced in early 2024, features white thermoplastic bay markings, including six accessible bays adjacent to the college entrance, complete with dropped kerbs and tactile guidance. Operating hours are 6 am10 pm MondayFriday for staff and students (permit-only); weekends and evenings require a temporary permit from college security. LED column lighting provides uniform coverage, and CCTV cameras installed at four corners monitor all entry and exit points. In 2024, drainage trenches were installed along the western boundary to mitigate surface water during heavy rainfall. A covered cycle shelter with capacity for 30 bicycles encourages bike-and-ride; directional signage guides drivers to the nearby A1231 exit toward the A1. Monthly maintenance includes litter clearance, line repainting, and pothole repairs.
