Free natural parking for Tunstall Hills walking trails
Tunstall Hills Nature Reserve Car Park is a free, rural parking lay-by located at Plus Code VJJ7+HR on Tunstall Hills (postcode SR3 1AA). It accommodates approximately 20 vehicles on a compacted gravel surface. There is no barrier, payment machine, or lighting; the lot is open first-come, first-served from dawn until dusk. A wooden signpost marks the trailhead for the 4 km circular walking route around the former stadia hill, offering panoramic views over Sunderland and the North Sea. Benches along the lower slopes allow resting and bird-watching—common sightings include kestrels and meadow pipits. The landscape is designated a Local Nature Reserve, with areas of semi-natural grassland and wildflower meadows, managed to support pollinators. Dogs must be kept on a lead in sheep-grazed areas. Access is via a narrow single-track road, and 4×4 vehicles are discouraged. No EV charging or restroom facilities exist.
