Visitor-friendly parking with validation and accessible bays
Located immediately north of Gateshead Civic Centre on Arthur Street, this 180-space car park serves council employees and visitors to the civic complex. The tarmac surface was resurfaced in 2023 and features 10 accessible bays adjacent to the pedestrian ramp leading to the main entrance. Operating 7 am7 pm MondayFriday and closed weekends, the lot uses a barrier-controlled entry system, allowing free parking for the first 90 minutes for visitors (validated via reception); thereafter, a £1 per hour charge applies, payable at pay and display machines accepting coins, card, or the PayByPhone app. LED column lighting with motion-activated pathway lights ensures safety after dusk, and the entire area is under constant CCTV surveillance, linked to the Councils security office. Twice-daily security patrols verify permit-only zones and proper use of accessible bays. Directional signage at the entrance directs drivers to adjacent overflow parking during large events at the Civic Centre. Native hedgerow planting along the western edge reduces rainwater runoff and provides a visual buffer to Arthur Street traffic.
