Free parking for Forest walks and Roaches Ridge ascents
Clough House Car Park is a free, Forestry Englandmanaged gravel lay-by located on an unnamed road near Wildboarclough, serving walkers accessing the Roaches Ridge and Dane Valley. The unmarked facility accommodates approximately 30 vehicles on a first-come basis; it opens at dawn and closes at dusk; overnight parking is prohibited. There is no lighting or CCTV; visitors must park in daylight. A Forestry England noticeboard at the entrance provides detailed maps of the 6 km Roaches Ridge loop, notes on local geology, and wildlife-spotting tips (e.g., peregrine falcons, oak processionary moth presence). Benches and picnic tables are positioned near the lots perimeter overlooking pastoral farmland. Pedestrian trails lead directly to the Roaches ascent trailhead (100 m) and to connecting routes toward Gradbach (2 km). Seasonal fell-running events reduce capacity by 10; signage directs drivers to Trentabank Car Park (3 km) with a timed shuttle bus. Maintenance crews clear litter monthly and remove invasive species quarterly.
