Free daytime parking for Downs Banks nature trails
Downs Banks Car Park is a free, rural gravel lay-by located at the end of Wash Dale Lane, providing access to the Downs Banks Local Nature Reserve. The site accommodates around 40 vehicles on a first-come basis, operating from dawn until dusk; no overnight parking, lighting, or CCTV is available. Adjacent to the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust information board, the car park supports visitors embarking on the 4 km North Staffordshire waymarked loop, including stone stile crossings and heathland vistas. Benches positioned at the reserve boundary offer rest points overlooking mixed woodland and heath habitats, renowned for reed buntings and occasional merlins. A single horse trough used as a wildlife drinking point is found near the lotÂ’s northern edge. Seasonal guided walks depart from this site every Saturday between April and October, highlighting rare wildflowers and local archaeology.
