Free Car Park is a council-operated facility serving shoppers and residents in eastern Colchester, located off Tollgate Way (CO5 0ES). The lot provides 100 sealed asphalt bays, including four accessible spaces adjacent to the pedestrian walkway leading to Tollgate Retail Park. Parking is free of charge with no time restriction, although overnight stays are discouraged by signage. Solar-powered LED bollard lights illuminate pedestrian routes from dusk until 10 pm. No CCTV is installed, but regular patrols by council wardens ensure security. Covered community notice boards at the entrance display retail park store directories, event listings, and bus schedules. Pedestrian pathways lead directly to major retailers such as Sainsbury’s, B&Q, and Argos within a two-minute walk. Monthly maintenance includes line repainting, pothole repairs, and litter clearance to maintain a tidy retail environment.
