Scenic canal parking with free access and accessible bays
Gunthorpe Lock Car Park is a free, unlit gravel lot located off Main Street, providing 50 bays for walkers, anglers, and canal boat users at Gunthorpe Lock. Operating hours are dawn to dusk (approx. 6 am8 pm in summer; 7 am6 pm in winter); no formal lighting is installed to preserve the rural ambiance. Two accessible bays surfaced with compacted stone are positioned within 10 m of the pedestrian path to the lock and towpath, each equipped with drop-kerb ramps and tactile paving. A small notice board at the entrance provides maps of canal towpaths and fishing regulations. In 2025, the gravel surface was regraded and fresh stone applied to maintain a level surface; additional drainage trenches were added along the eastern boundary to prevent pooling. A single CCTV camera mounted on a timber post offers limited coverage during operational hours. Volunteer canal trust wardens conduct daily patrols between 8 am and 6 pm to ensure litter clearance and provide visitor assistance. Directional signage guides users to the exit onto Main Street.
