Scenic riverside parking with free access and accessible bays
Gunthorpe River Car Park is a free, riverside gravel lot providing 40 bays serving anglers, canoeists, and walkers accessing the Gunthorpe stretch of the River Trent. Operating hours are dawn to dusk (approx. 6 am8 pm in summer; 7 am6 pm in winter); no formal lighting is provided to preserve the rural ambiance and protect local wildlife. Two accessible bays surfaced with compacted stone are located nearest the raised pedestrian footpath to the riverside, each equipped with drop-kerb ramps and tactile paving. An interpretive board at the entrance offers maps of riverside walking trails and fishing regulations. In early 2024, the gravel surface underwent regrading and compaction to prevent rutting, while drainage ditches were added along the eastern boundary to mitigate standing water. A single CCTV camera mounted on a wooden post provides limited monitoring during daytime hours. Directional signage designates pedestrian and fishing access points. Monthly volunteer maintenance includes litter clearance and trail upkeep.
