Free parking for Manton Pit Woods walks and wildlife
Manton Pit Wood Car Park is a free, Forestry England gravel lay-by located off Forest Road, serving Manton Pit Woods walk and wildlife watching. The unmarked facility accommodates approximately 25 vehicles on a first-come basis; it operates from dawn until dusk; no overnight parking. There is no lighting or CCTV; park in daylight only. An interpretive panel at the entrance provides maps of the 3 km circular woodland trail, geological history of the former colliery, and wildlife-spotting tips (e.g., woodpeckers, roe deer). Benches and picnic tables are positioned near the lot perimeter overlooking dense mixed woodland. Pedestrian paths lead directly to the main trailhead (0.05 km) and onward to Sheepwalk Common (2 km). Seasonal volunteer conservation days reduce capacity by 5; signage directs drivers to the Kings Wood overflow lay-by (1 km). Maintenance crews clear invasive rhododendron and litter monthly.
