Free parking for Middletown Hill scenic walks and wildlife
Middletown Hill Car Park is a free council-operated gravel lay-by located off Shepherds Lane, serving access to the scenic Middletown Hill and surrounding common lands. The unmarked facility accommodates approximately 30 vehicles on a first-come basis; open from dawn until dusk; overnight parking is prohibited. There is no lighting or CCTV; daytime visits only. A large wayfinding kiosk at the entrance displays trail maps for the 6 km circular Middletown Hill walk, geological information on Silurian rock formations, and local wildlife spotting tips (e.g., red kites, common lizards). Benches and picnic tables are positioned near the lot perimeter overlooking the rolling farmland. Pedestrian paths lead directly to the hill summit viewpoints (0.05 km) and to connecting bridleways toward Roundton Hill (4 km). Seasonal nature conservation volunteer events reduce capacity by 5; drivers are directed to the nearby village lay-by on Middletown Road (1 km). Maintenance crews clear scrub growth quarterly and perform litter picks monthly.
