Paid parking for St Marys Island nature reserve access.
St Marys Island Nature Reserve Car Park is a council-operated, tarmacked facility located on The Links, Whitley Bay (NE26 4RS), serving the nature reserve at St Marys Island. Accommodating approximately 90 vehicles, including eight accessible bays positioned near the main trailhead, the lot uses pay-and-display MondaySaturday 08:0018:00 at £2.00 per hour (no maximum stay); Sundays are free. LED lighting columns illuminate the car park from dusk until midnight, and CCTV cameras cover all aisles. A sealed footpath leads from the lot to the reserve boardwalk (0.1 miles), which encircles the island at low tide and provides access to historic lighthouse ruins. An interpretive information board at the entrance displays local wildlife surveys, including nesting terns and seal haul-outs. The asphalt surface was resurfaced in 2022, with fresh bay markings and raised kerbs to deter overparking on pedestrian routes. Drainage channels prevent pooling during high tides and heavy rain. Monthly ranger-led guided walks educate visitors on saltmarsh ecology.
