Free daytime parking for St Peters historic site
St Peters Gate Visitor Car Park is a small, free surface lot adjacent to the former St Peters United Reformed Church (postcode SR6 0AN). It accommodates 20 vehicles on a gravel surface. The lot is open dawn to dusk only; no overnight parking. There is no charge or ticket machine. No lighting or CCTV is provided, so early-morning or late-evening visits are discouraged. The pedestrian pathway leads to the Monkwearmouth Station Museum (0.15 km), St Peters Church ruins, and the historic St Peters Riverside Walk. A single bench offers resting space overlooking the River Wear. Disabled access is possible but uneven ground may pose challenges. Local volunteers maintain the adjacent wildflower garden. Dogs are allowed on leads, and occasional community heritage tours use this as a meeting point.
