Woodland parking with free access and accessible bays
Thieves Wood Car Park serves the ancient Thieves Wood woodland, offering 60 bays on a compacted gravel surface. Open dawn to dusk (approx. 6 am8 pm summer; 7 am6 pm winter), no formal lighting is provided to protect bat and owl habitatsvisitors are advised to arrive during daylight hours. Two accessible bays surfaced with firm stone are located within 8 m of the main stone-tiled footpath into the wood, each fitted with drop-kerb ramps and tactile paving for safe access. A single CCTV camera mounted on a high wooden post provides limited monitoring during opening hours. In 2024, the gravel was regraded and topped up to maintain a level parking surface, and additional drainage trenches were cut along the perimeter to prevent pooling. An interpretive kiosk at the entrance displays maps of heritage trails, information on recommended walking routes, and guidance on wildlife conservation practices. Volunteer wardens patrol the site daily between 8 am and 6 pm, conducting litter clearance and providing visitor information. Directional signage inside the lot directs drivers to the exit onto Coxmoor Road.
