Rustic parking for reclaimed mining nature trails.

Be the first to review

Walton Colliery Nature Reserve Car Park is a free, gravel-reinforced facility managed by Wakefield Council, located on Shay Lane (WF1 5RZ), serving Walton Colliery Nature Park. The lot holds around 80 vehicles, including two informal disabled-access spots on level ground near the entrance signage. There is no lighting or CCTV, so parking is daylight hours only (approx. 06:00–20:00 in summer). A compacted gravel path leads from the car park to boardwalks through reclaimed spoil heaps, wildflower meadows, and wetland scrapes—home to dragonflies, warblers, and water voles. An interpretation panel at the entrance details the site’s mining heritage and ongoing habitat restoration. The surface is graded biannually to maintain evenness, with drainage ditches along the perimeter to prevent standing water; volunteers conduct monthly litter picks and monitor biodiversity.
