Secure parking near Sunderland Civic Centre and Museum
West Wear Street Car Park is a guarded, pay-and-display surface lot operated by Sunderland City Council, located opposite the City Hall on West Wear Street (postcode SR1 1TW). The asphalt car park offers 80 marked spaces, including four Blue Badge bays and two motorcycle bays. A barrier arm secures entry from 7 am to 8 pm; after closing hours, the barrier remains up, but parking is free overnight. Payment is via a pay machine accepting coins, contactless cards, and mobile app; tariffs are £2.00 for up to three hours, £6.00 for up to six hours, and a daily maximum of £10.00. Lighting is provided by five LED floodlights until midnight, and CCTV cameras cover all quadrants. Pedestrian access leads into the Civic Centre complex (0.05 km), Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens (0.1 km), and the Keel Square redevelopment. EV charging is provided by two 7 kW chargers located near the barrier. There is a central pedestrian refuge styled as a landscaped planter. Usage peaks during council events and exhibitions.
