Whitwell Wood Parking is a free, Forestry Englandmanaged gravel lay-by located on Chesterfield Road, providing access to Whitwell Wood and its walking trails. The unmarked facility accommodates approximately 20 vehicles; it operates from dawn until dusk; no overnight parking. There is no lighting or CCTV; daytime visits only. A Forestry England noticeboard at the entrance displays maps for a 3 km circular woodland trail, information on native species (e.g., great spotted woodpeckers, badgers), and guidelines for responsible access. Benches and picnic tables are positioned near the lot perimeter overlooking mature oak woodland. Pedestrian paths lead directly to the main trailhead (0.05 km) and to a connecting bridleway toward Brook Hill (2 km). Seasonal mountain biking events reduce capacity by 5; signage directs drivers to the Creswell Car Park (2 km). Maintenance crews clear invasive bracken quarterly and perform litter picks monthly.
